“What happened?” Paul asked, as the car lurched forward. “Did they find a bug in the software or something?”
“I wasn’t given that information,” Leonard answered. “The boss just wants all of you back at the cabin. That’s all.”
“It’s probably some minor detail we overlooked,” said Tom. “I’m sure it’s nothing serious,” he said trying to calm Paul whose fear was becoming apparent.
“Yeah. You’re probably right. Something minor I’m sure,” said Paul trying to act as if they were being taken to perform some routine operation on their project.
As the car traveled out of town, all three remained silent until Tom started to make small talk about how the surrounding area looked like an area he used to hike and camp in as a kid.
“Man,” said Paul, “when I was a kid, I only had a chance to camp out twice but I wanted to so many times.”
“Well, who knows,” said Tom, as the car turned on the final road to the cabin, you might just have a chance to do so as a man.”
“You think so?”
“Sure,” said Tom as his right hand closed around the bottom end of the steel pipe. “In fact, I’m positive.”
“He concluded sweeping the pipe in a tight arc from his left into the back of Leonard’s head. He then swung the pipe back to the right as the car smashed into a tree. The driver hit the wind- shield and was dazed. Paul unbuckled his seatbelt and climbed from the car. Tom slightly dazed tried to open the door but it was jammed. He shuffled to the opposite side of the car and got out quickly running around to the other side. The guard slowly brought his head up bleeding from facial cuts reached for his gun. Tom arrived at the driver’s side and struck the window with his pipe. Leonard turned away as thousands of glass shards em- bedded in his upper body. Then he turned back toward Tom in gut wrenching pain covered with glass and blood still trying to remove his gun. Tom swung the pipe again as Leonard’s hand rose to neck level.
