Paul knelt silently, tears forming in his eyes. “What’s wrong? Are you hurt?” Tom asked. “No. I’m just thanking God we got this far.” “Well, thank Him for both of us.”
“I also hope to God we can save the rest of them,” Paul ut- tered. “But even if we do, we’ve given Sir Psycho the means to kill us even if we are lucky enough to survive.”
“Damn,” said Tom, “you are too many steps ahead of me. For now, let’s just worry about one step at a time. Eating this elephant is hard enough as it is without you trying to swallow a whole thigh. Let’s go. We’ve got a car to catch up to.”
Tom led Paul into the woods heading for the cabin, moving parallel to the road.
You know where you’re going?” Paul asked.
“Yeah. Towards the cabin.” All we have to do is parallel the road. We can’t afford to be seen first. At this point, we are the bad guys to the bad guys and the bad guys to the good guys, until we convince the good guys we are at least okay. If we don’t do it, we risk being dead bad guys.”
“Boy! You picked a hell of a time to talk morals.
“Really? Well I guess it’s because I hear people who don’t do anything from cradle to grave but sit on their asses and talk about morals, as if they have done something that forces them to make real choices. ‘I wouldn’t do this, or I wouldn’t do that.’ You hear that crap all the time. It’s normally said by those spoiled assholes that get what they want before they know what to do with what they need.”
“Why are you telling me this?
“Because I know you think it was wrong for me to get you and the guys into this, but it was right for me because it enabled me to survive and sometimes survival is all that matters! It was also wrong to kill Leonard. But is it right for him or those killers we unleashed to kill us? I doubt it. Life is a double-edged sword, and sometimes, until you make a choice, you don’t know where
