“Okay,” both women said in unison.
“Regardless of where we go, try to relax and stay close,” Sky admonished. “By the way, that’s a beautiful angel on your col- lar.”
“Thank you. “My mother gave it to me,” Sienna answered beaming.
“I’m her guardian angel,” Jennifer noted.
“Well, you both have one now,” Sky concluded. “And this one will protect you with his life. Okay, let’s go to our assigned rooms and wait. After five minutes, we’ll start turning out the lights.”
He sat in the front room finishing his mental plan for protect- ing the women, while the women remained in their rooms. Finally, he hit the living room light and moved to the kitchen to wait.
Sienna turned her light off forty-five seconds later. Jennifer sat on the bed in her room wondering what the future would bring for her star-crossed family suddenly realizing her light was the only one on. She closed her eyes and said a silent prayer then serenely got up from the bed, turned out the light, and moved to the kitchen. As she entered the kitchen, Sienna walked into her mother’s arms. Sky could see their silhouetted movements and decided to wait a few moments before opening the door. He gave them time to adjust their eyes to the darkness and then decided it was time.
“Let’s go,” he said quietly opening the door, leading the la- dies into the car, and locking the kitchen door.
“All right everybody buckle up. If anything happens out of the ordinary, get down. Here we go.”
The garage door started its ascent as both ladies gripped each other’s hands tight enough to constrict blood flow. Both looked at each other trying to feign smiles to reassure each other as the car’s movement pinned them to the back seat. Sky had sped from the garage and turned right with a motion akin to a
