“Mom, I’m hurting, but it’s better than being dead. Besides I love you, and I have faith in you. I truly believe we will get out of this.”
Sienna eased back down to the floor, wincing in pain from having her unusual position. Jennifer was getting a cramp in her finger from pushing so hard when suddenly she heard a click as the second handcuff opened on her wrist. She laid down at al- most the same instant thinking Dan would wake up, but he continued to snore. Sienna finally pushed herself up on her el- bows not believing her right hand was free. Jennifer replaced her pin and glanced at the window suddenly realizing the morn- ing was gaining on their efforts. She would have to think of something quickly.
“Keep those cuffs quiet. I’m going to try to reach the gun,” she told Sienna.
Sienna waited on the side of the bed while her stepmother started quietly crawling toward the head of the bed.
When she pushed her body up to see if Dan was still sleep- ing, he was no longer snoring, but she continued crawling. Reaching the head of the bed, Jennifer slowly pulled up, sliding her hand slowly over the mattress toward the pillow. She touched the gun butt and started trembling hoping she could pull it out without waking Dan. Her hand slid further slowly being wedged between the pillow and the gun. She grasped about two inches of the butt and decided to pull with everything she was worth.
Dan’s eyes slowly opened staring into Jennifer’s at mattress level. Jennifer jerked quickly and the gun came whizzing into view. Dan punched Jennifer in the face slowly coming to his senses. The punch accelerated the momentum of her pull and caused her to fall backwards onto the floor and release her grip on the gun.
Bang! Cling! The gun fired and sailed through the window as Jennifer hit the floor.
