held each other as best as they could, lying face down separated by the bedpost. Sienna sobbed softly as Dan started snoring.
Jennifer suddenly held Sienna’s chin in her left hand whis- pering: “It’s okay, honey, it’s okay. Give me your angel.
Sienna held herself up by her stomach and left hand as Jen- nifer took her angel pin with her left hand.
“You’re going to have to relax, sweetheart, and let your right hand go.”
Jennifer took the pin and started twisting and turning inside of the keyhole of the handcuffs.
Cling! The pin bounced off the handcuff keyhole. Although the sound was negligible, the women froze. Sienna shuffled her position and Dan stopped snoring. Both lay quietly on their stom- achs feigning sleep. Dan started snoring again.
“Mom, I’m really scared. I don’t want to die.”
“Leave your hands on the side and rest as best as you can. I’m doing the best I can.”
Jennifer started twisting with a vengeance, while Sienna lay uncomfortable thinking and sobbing over happier times with her real mother. Jennifer’s hand started to go numb from the constant pressure she had on the pin wondering why the keyhole wouldn’t release its grip. She wouldn’t give up and started to pray.
“Lord, I pray to you. Please don’t let the rest of my family perish on this new day. I have tried to be a good.”
Click! The opening of the handcuffs on Sienna’s wrist was so sudden it shocked them both.
Sienna raised her head in disbelief staring into her mother’s eyes. Jennifer motioned her to lie back down and noticed that Dan had stopped snoring again. But she was taking no chances. Both women’s hearts beat like drums as they tried to fake sleep when he adjusted his position in bed. Jennifer waited a full five minutes after Dan resumed snoring before she held her head up to continue. She rose to her elbows once more and pulled herself to the bedpost. Sienna tried to relax wanting to move with one hand free.
