becoming casualties. Like you guys, I put them in harm’s way, and I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive myself for that.
Brock grabbed Seige’s arm turning both men face to face.
“I appreciate my position as the task force director, but to tell you the truth, I was hoping to be in a position that would allow me a little more action. If you came back, I could be you and you could be director. What do you think?”
Seige smiled. “Look at it like this: As the task force director you can choose how often you are actually in the field. Now who else has that kind of an advantage?”
“You have a point. I just don’t want to be one of those dumb- ass leaders who go around getting in everybody’s way; coming up with all kinds of arcane policies just to validate my phony- baloney job. I want to be more like you.”
“Who’s going to stop you from doing that?
“I didn’t think you would make this easy for me.
“I’ve got to tell you, that’s a pretty smart daughter you have.
And as long as I live, I will never again say anything against women being inquisitive again.”
“You mean nosey, don’t you?”
“That too. I mean I don’t think I’m smart enough to set all of the killers against Corin and then each other the way your kid did. You, huh, think she might want to work for the federal gov- ernment say sometime in the future?”
Both men paused and looked at each other and smiled.
“Why would you need her? Paul is testing to be an agent as we speak.”
“True. And it looks like he’s going to make it.”
Seige smiled.
What’s so funny? I recognize that smile.”
“Oh nothing. I was just listening to a man who was wonder-
ing if he would make a good director. Sounds just like one.”
“I really appreciate that coming from you, and, well, I’m re- ally curious about something that’s been bugging the hell out of
me.
