XXIII Passing the Baton
Brock watched and waited as Seige made his rounds hugging and shaking hands with the families who had sustained losses. He made a special effort to hug and to talk to the men who had become his brothers, men he had led, men he was about to leave. But Brock knew Seige’s history and understood why he seemed to pause forever with Visara.
She said with tears glistening in her eyes, “Seige, I’ll miss you but never forget you. And when you walk away, you will never be forgotten. I won’t get all mushy, but you know my love for you is a special feeling I can share with no other. I can think of no other man on earth I admire and respect than you. Regard- less of our future, I still consider you my soulmate.”
Softly he replied, “I have always felt the love we had for each other. Actually, it burns so hot it’s untouchable. I guess it’s a feeling I want to share with you but am more afraid to mess up. I have always felt it should be explored but was afraid to tamper with perfection. There is never a time when you are near me that I don’t feel unbalanced. I would rather have your love and adu- lation in essence than risk diminishing it because of my human frailties. I consider myself lucky to have actually experienced genuine love in this life with a true goddess. I guess, in the end, like most of us, I’ve settled for a fallback position. And I guess I will always want to be with you, but true knowledge of myself may always hold me back. Still, know that you are always loved. Always!”
