I know each of you, and you are all bosses for a reason. When I say shutdown in approximately six months, that means this en- tire operation will cease to exist in its entirety. I shouldn’t have to say this but that means no one will use, manufacture, sell, or continue the drug or any part of this operation in any form. Part of the shutdown means all of us will move to another location afterwards.”
“Study the folders. If you have any problems with the loca- tion I have selected for you to move to, let me know before you leave this room. The six-month countdown begins in one week and anyone detected in operation after that will be exterminated. When you leave this room, you will have one week to initiate project phase one of this operation. I will be here as long as anyone has a question, longer if you need to talk about a prob- lem. You leave this room with the understanding that there will be zero tolerance for failure.”
Corin rose and moved toward the window amid a flurry of shuffling papers.
“Unlike most other illegal operations, I don’t plan for us to get caught.”
Tom approached Corin silently but did not disturb his peace. Corin whirled and faced Tom as if he knew he had been standing there all along.
“Follow me!” he said and proceeded toward the door. “Gentlemen, I’ll be back shortly. If you have questions of me, save them until I return.”
A hush fell over the room when the door closed.
“Tom, the job I want you to do is important to say the least. I want no slip-ups and no excuses. Before I tell you what it is, I want to know can you do it.”
The sound of Tom’s heart rang in his ears. In a flash of men- tality, he thought of how he was going to be disposed of.
He said very coolly, before droplets of sweat gave him away, “If it can be done I will do it”.
