“Tonight is the night, “he affirmed to himself.
He walked up to a pay phone and dropped the quarter on the ground attempting to put 35 cents into the slot. He looked around smiling at the embarrassment he felt then chuckled at the thought as he considered the stakes. Cling! Cling! Two coins slipped into the phone’s stomach like bullets into a chamber.
“Hello? Corin?”
“Who is this?” questioned Corin.
“Is this Corin? Dan asked.
“Maybe.
“I have information that you need for your survival. I’ll call
back in a few minutes. If you tell me you don’t need it, I won’t call back.”
Click.
Dan thought he sounded cool on the phone, but his pulse was still racing.
Corin sat wondering who the caller was and what information he had. Yet the burning question was how did he know who would answer the phone. He decided to play along. The phone rang.
“Who is this?” said Corin.
“An even better question is what do I have for you,” said the caller.
“Answer either question”
“Talon. And I can help you get them before they get you.” Corin did not answer as he sat at his desk frozen in surprise. “You are not known as a wanted man yet, and if you want to
keep it that way, follow my orders to the letter tomorrow. By the way, I hold no grudge against you, so there are three stipula- tions: First, you must come alone, as I will be. And once the transaction is concluded, forget about me forever.”
“And the third?” said Corin.
“Bring a half million dollars cash. That’s how you can insure this loose end is tied forever. If I suspect any treachery, you will not hear from me again, and things will just happen as they do normally.”
