This year will certainly go down in the history books as one to remember, but not for all the good reasons. There have been too many unfortunate episodes to contend with.
But first, the good news. The Toronto Black Watch Association hosted its 92nd annual Red Hackle Dinner on January 11, and from all reports it was a tremendous success providing an exciting and enjoyable evening for all 182 in attendance. The Meet and Greet as always was popular, being a chance to meet old comrades and rekindle memories with members of the Toronto Garrison along with Montreal, Upper Canada, and Atlantic Black Watch Association Branches.
Notables included LGen Wayne Eyre CMM, MSC, CD and CWO Stuart Hartnell, MMM, MSM, CD, Commander and Sergeant Major respectively of the Canadian Army, who delivered a Tag Team keynote address to those in attendance amongst which were HCol Cdn Army Paul Hindo; LCol Plourde; HCol O’Connor; HLCol Bolton; Peter MacKay, PC, QC.; Olympic bobsledder Heather Moyse; Ian Lawson VP Spartan Race; and the Presidents of PPCLI Association, the RCR Association (Toronto Branch), the Black Watch Association (Montreal Branch), the Treble
Victor Group, Reno’s for Heroes, and True Patriot Love Organizations. Displays were provided by the Vimy Foundation, Spartan Inc, The RCR Association, war artist Roger Chabot, the Black Rifle Coffee Company, authors David O’Keefe and Ted Baris, and of course the Black Watch Kit Shop.
The evening opened with the singing of O Canada and a Toast to The Fallen. This was followed by the Piping In by WO Iain Dewar of the Haggis Party comprised of MWO (Ret) Ed Burgess and D/Maj (Ret) Mike Morello as Bearers with MWO Chris Reesor who delivered the Address.
Guest speakers LGen Eyre and CWO Hartnell shared the today’s challenges for the CAF in keeping pace with the constantly changing electronic technology and the need to look “outside the box” for potential recruits to fill the requirements presented by today’s electronic environment. A remarkably interesting and informative presentation.
For their long-term support of the TBWA, President Carlisle presented Col (Ret) Geordie Elms, MSM, CD and Donald Ludlow, CD of the RCR GTA Branch copies
