BLACK WATCH ASSOCIATION MONTREAL BRANCH
By Rick Cartmel, CD, President
One of my last formal duties as President of the BWVA was to place a wreath at the Field of Honour in Pointe Claire on Sunday June 7th. It was a great privilege to do so knowing that so many of our past soldiers are resting in this beautiful location as well as many good friends.
It has been an honour and very rewarding being the President for the past four years (and extension). The BW Regiment has always had so many distinctive characteristics to be proud of. From the histories of the WW1 and WWI and the veterans, I will never forget how much guidance and experiences they have shared with me. Also, the last four years could not have been successful without an Executive team that I had the luck and opportunity to work with. Personally, I have always thought of “Teamwork” as a beautiful word as well as the essence of society. Which in today’s shutdown we re-realise how important interactions and working together are. After serving as president in six different organizations in my life, all have always presented different challenges, and what would life be without challenges. When one finally is in the last days of being in charge, they are considered a Lame Duck president, myself I have few regrets.
Membership is up by at least 60, finances in the plus, and monies being used for veterans’ issues, and not only that, but solid persons taking interest in our BWVA. Regrets if any would be not always being where the Regiment or
Association wanted me but with a great executive team, I confidently knew they would carry on, the right way.
Many times, as President, I must have appeared to be missing in action. This especially happens around Remembrance Day where I can be found at the National Field of Honour on November 11th fulfilling my other duties as one of the Directors of the Last Post Fund and showing the Red Hackle at that event. So that is why our Association does not see me on that special day. Actually, I find it really important to have our Regiment represented and visual outside of our regular circles. This helps in recruiting new members and keeping
