Whether it be in time of war or peace, paying tribute to our fallen regimental brothers remains the same. This section of our publication not only serves as a death notice list but also a form of final salute to those who have worn the Red Hackle and nobly served, placing Queen and Country before self. With their life’s journey now complete may they forever rest in peace.
Nemo Me Impune Lacessit
James Gordon Conway
Born on Feb 19, 1946 and passed away at Ste Anne’s Hospital on Nov 21, 2020 at 75.
Joined Black Watch in 1963. As PMC of the Men’s Mess wrote directly to Clarence House asking for a signed portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, our Colonel-in- Chief. Commissioned to captain, became Adjutant, and OC #4 Guard on the 1987 Trooping of the Colours. A constable with CPR Police & got a Bachelor of Arts at Concordia. He leaves behind his daughter Shannon and grandson Kiernan.
William (Bill) Albert Leavey – Lt-Col (Ret)
Born on Mar 15, 1948 and passed away in Kingston, ON on Oct 28, 2020 at 72.
Served as an Infantry Officer 42 years in The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada, The Royal Canadian Regiment, the Canadian Airborne Regiment, & The Princess of Wales’ Own Regiment, which he was proud to command from 2002-2006. Served in Canada, Cyprus, & Germany.
Gerald (Jerry) E. Connelly
Born on Oct 25, 1937 in PEI and passed away on Oct 16, 2020 in Fredericton, NB.
Graduated from RHC Depot before it moved to Gagetown in 1958. Posted to 1 RHC in Aldershot and went to Germany, Gagetown, Norway, France, Cyprus (Sp Coy), Egypt, & Jamaica. Posted to 2 RCR 1970 and remained for a number of years before remustering.
Robert J. (Snick) Van Snick
Born in 1937 in Joggins Mine, NS and passed away on Oct 8th, 2020 at Shediac, NB at 83.
Joined the Army Reserve’s North Nova Scotia Highlanders in 1953 and 2 RHC when it returned from Korea in
1954. He was released in Sep 1956 on medical grounds.
Ronald Matthew George Clare
Born on Dec 28, 1949 in Halifax, NS and passed away on Sep 16, 2020 at Abbottsford, BC.
Served in Cyprus with 2 RHC (A Coy) on final tour 1969/70 and remustered to cook trade on return, serving more than 30 years before retiring as MWO.
A.E.S. Emile (Mel) Morin
Born on Mar 8, 1944 in Penetanguishene, ON and passed away on Sep 24, 2020 in Saint John, NB.
Graduated RHC Depot 142 Squad in October 1963
and posted to 1 RHC in Gagetown. Served with Allied Command Europe (ACE) Mobile Force NATO (Norway). Remustered to RC Dental Corps before the unit deployed to Cyprus in 1967.
Robert Henry (Hooch) McLean
Born Glace Bay, NS on Dec 14, 1931 and passed away on Sep 13, 2020 at Oromocto, NB at 88.
Hooch was one of the originals! Joined North Nova Scotia Highlanders Coy 1st CHB in Germany in 1953. Due to surplus, he became a Seaforth Highlander, where he remained until 1 CHB became 1 RHC in 1953. Served in Germany with 1RHC in 1959 with Anti-Tank Platoon, Gagetown in 1962 with Recce Platoon, Cyprus in 1967/68, 2 RCR in Cyprus 1973/74, & with UNEF-II in Ismailia, Egypt as a driver in Jun 1974. Awarded MMM in 1981. Retired in Jun 1984 after 33 years essentially in the same battalion – although it had morphed from 1 CHB to 1 RHC to 2 RCR.
Mike Skinner
Born in Glace Bay NS and passed away in Halifax, NS at 81. Began career with RCAF but opted to get out at end of 3-year contract and joined 2 RHC Germany 1962, Cyprus 1966 and 1969/70. When the Black Watch was removed from Regular Force order-of-battle in 1970, remustered back to his former RCAF trade.
Carl Alexander Faulkner
Born in Halifax, NS in 1947 and passed away on Sep 7, 2020 in Moncton, NB.
Graduated RHC Depot 148 Squad July 1964 and posted to 1 RHC. Cyprus 1967 (Sp Coy) and served later in Alert.
Reginald Earl (Reg) Dwyer
Born in Maccan, NS on Sep 6, 1934 and passed away on Jul 20, 2020 in Amherst, NS at 85.
Enlisted and posted to 2 RHC Aldershot on its return from Korea 1954 where remained for his entire military career.
