Maneesh Goyal, founder of
Pineapple Co—which includes
marketing, design, and con-
sulting businesses—says he’s a
“natural born convener.” But he
found a whole new way to bring
people together after he and
his husband visited Chile. “I did
a dinner party, with Chilean
foods and bottled water from
the Andes,” says Goyal, 43.
Attendees gushed, and he
thought: Don’t such meals
deserve elaborate decor? He
began seeking out curiosities:
blown-glass tumblers from
an appointment-only salon in
Paris; napkin rings made by
members of Kenya’s Maasai
tribe. (“They were doing bead-
work that was meant for brace-
lets,” says Goyal. “I asked, ‘Can
you make them baby-size?’ ”)
Such tabletops open doors for
his business. “People feel like
they want to help you,” he says,
“because you have helped
them have a spectacular eve-
