 DJ Gear:
THE BASICS
When I first decided that I wanted my own turntables, I told everyone. Thank God for good friends and clear intentions! Eventually, a friend of mine told me that they had a pair of turntables they would sell to me.
If you think that you want to be a DJ, go easy on purchasing expensive equipment in the beginning. What looks easy isn’t always that way. I know of people that have said, “I’m going to be a DJ,” they quickly bought expensive equipment only to realize that it is not as simple as they thought. As well, they did not love the game at the level that inspired them to put
in the work to get positive results. They didn’t know that they would have to gain an understanding of their individual clients, understand their needs, and structure a set with strategically chosen songs on top of learning the craft of DJ’ing. Not to mention, knowing that a DJ needs to have the necessary skills to change a set on the spot.
Make sure this is what you really want to do, and if it is, begin to gather your gear. Sometimes you can find used good quality gear for a reasonable price. Depending on your budget, you may be able to find some used equipment that is a better quality used gear than what you can afford to purchase if it was new. I was always told to buy a used deck and new mixers. Take your time, research quality gear, and master your craft. Also, know there are so many digital options.
