The bridges are of course
in London, on the Thames; in these paintings the Thames is a mirror of the Franklin, (black swan, white swan).
My pictures have often been described as bridges that span the emotional and physical worlds but the title of the work refers to the way a figurative painting can operate,
Each of the two landscapes acts as a ’bridge’ – a device that allows the viewer to enter into the surface of the work. Looking back, perhaps the title should have been ‘three bridges’ as the figure in the blue dress, with its references to the Franklin and Gordon rivers is also a landscape. The Thames,The
