POSITIVE SPACE and NEGATIVE SPACE

Forms and shapes in architecture can be considered as positive or negative. In a

space positive space considered as main activities area in our space. It is the

main focus in our design. The negative space is the space around and between
the subjects. Positive and negative space can form an important part of our

overall space design. In our space planning we can use positive and negative

space to create a sense of balance and rhythm. Balance is one of the important
principles of design. In design balance means how well we can make our overall

space composition balanced with each other. Furthermore in architectural

design, positive space depending on the intention of the design while negative
space is the space around.

The positive image is for a white vase while two black

pictures facing each other is the negative image. Easy to

relate it to architecture the positive image represents the

building shape, while the negative image which is the

black part represents the area surrounding the building.
