8 dark skies
The quality of the night sky arching above the Beacons
has been recognised internationally. This is one of the
best places in the world to stargaze.
In 2012, the Brecon Beacons National Park was the fifth
place in the world to be recognised as an International
Dark Sky Reserve and is still one of only 22 Reserves
worldwide.
Immerse yourself in all things Dark Skies at the
Brecon Beacons National Park Dark Skies Festival
on the 21st September 2024. Booking will be available
online when tickets are released.
When is best to stargaze?
The best time to go are the days before, during and soon
after each new moon, when there is no moon in the sky.
Wrap up warm and if you have got a telescope
or binoculars bring them along.
Top Darkest Spots!
Darkness is the vital ingredient for a stargazing site which
means these top sites are a little off the beaten track.
Use the app what3words, which will work with mapping
apps on your smartphone, to get you to the perfect
stargazing spot. If you prefer paper we have also provided
an OS grid reference.
