4 CONTEXT, BACKGROUND & PURPOSE OF THIS DOCUMENT
4.1 Context
4.1.1 The National and International Picture
In the UK, our health and care system continues under enormous stress, with the pandemic bringing this into sharp focus. Likewise, affordable housing, although an issue for many years, is now high on the national Government’s agenda.
The importance of access to and engagement with nature has also been highlighted as families have been confined to their homes.
Statistics tell us that we are an increasingly ageing population, with all the attendant issues of dependency, loneliness and isolation.
We are told that we are using up at least 21⁄2 planet’s worth of natural resources every year. We are, in effect, borrowing resources from future generations, but with no re- payment plan. “Earth Overshoot Day” is getting nearer each year.
4.1.2 The Picture in Wales
It is with pride that Wales can claim to be the only country to have fully embraced the concept of sustainability and enshrined it in legislation. The Well-being of Future
