This mixed woodland, in a tranquil valley near the Black Mountains, is home to a
variety of plants and animals. A boardwalk winds its way through the woodland and
joins up with compacted earth paths. The valley bottom is wet where alder trees and
other damp loving plants grow. The drier woodland elsewhere has large oak, ash and
beech with hazel underneath, where dormice have been found. The woodland was
traditionally managed by coppicing, with the timber used for clog soles and making
charcoal.
How to get there: From Abergavenny take the A465 north towards Hereford. Turn off
the A465 at Llanfihangel Crucorney and then take the turning at The Skirrid Inn. After
0.9miles/1.5km turn left at Stanton (there is a nature reserve sign) and follow the road
for a further 1.2miles/2km. NP7 7NA should take you approx. 0.6 miles/1km before the
woodland. The boardwalk trail is accessible for wheelchairs and mobility scooters with
turning areas and benches. There is a short, but strenuous walk behind the car park
which is not easy access.
