Transport & Logistics
With more consumers switching to online shopping, transport and
delivery networks are quickly evolving.
Currently there is large demand for drivers (HGV, Vans, Plant, Transport
etc). Also, there is large demand for warehousing trades and logistics.
Public transport operatives are also in high demand.
Potential risks to more traditional roles is automation, but this could also
be seen as an exciting opportunity for new workers entering the sector.
Drones are already delivering grocery shopping in parts of England.
Automated warehouse picking and packing (Amazon). Therefore, placing
learning focus on these more technical & logistical skills will prove
valuable for a long-term future in this growing and evolving area of the
sector.
The Freeport opportunities will also require specialists in global
distribution networks, shipping and international trade.
Retail
Some aspects of retail are covered in the Hospitality
Section of this report.
Due to the shift towards online shopping, chain store high
street retail is seeing large declines in non-essential
goods stores.
Although not great news for the large high street retailers,
this is a great opportunity for independent retailers who
can “tap into” a local market and thrive on the high street
where larger chain stores are struggling, therefore closing
many locations and switching more to online trading.
With online shopping so easy now, digital savvy retailers
can easily tap into the online market, making this an
entrepreneurial sector.
There are job increases in food retail, supermarkets and
food delivery systems, although as automation starts to
take over, these warehousing jobs may see declines &
skill competence changes.
Financial & Professional
The sector is having a digital shake up, Open banking, Fin Tec, etc
so huge opportunities for mathematicians and computing experts.
Many services are becoming online options such as solicitors,
financial advice etc, which has resulted in less of these
occupations in the region. However, there is large demand for
procurement, consenting, legal development and environmental
law. Therefore, the sector remains a strong one to enter.
