“The purchase of my first
horse was a very different
case from the ones we see
today. In fact, my parents
didn’t really buy me my first horse because my dad had race horses, and
at that time we had to start with thoroughbred horses that didn’t run an-
ymore. My horse was a chestnut gelding called Tio Feña. I never actually
tried him. My dad let me ride him when I was nine years old, and little by
little he became my first horse. I did my first competitions with him, and we
jumped the pre-children’s and children’s national championships together.
I had a very close relationship with Tio Feña because I liked to spend the
entire day around him. He taught me that sometime you win, and someti-
mes you lose. In my first show, we won the first day, and the second day
we got eliminated. After more than 40 years of experience with horses, the
best advice I can give to someone who is thinking about buying a horse is
to make sure that the horse corresponds to your level, to check the horse’s
show record, and of course, never miss the pre-purchase vet check.”

realize was too young for me, because I didn’t have much experience with
