This year’s championships were
incredible. We held a Combi Oven
seminar for the competitors and
instructors, our CFESA President,
John Schwindt, was in attendance and
spoke to the group. I served as a judge
during the competition. I was also
given the honor to go on stage and
present the silver medal to the second-
place contestant during the awards
ceremony, truly one of the biggest
thrills of my 40-year career in this
industry.

During the panel, Carbonara had a list of
prepared questions and directed them
to each panel member. The questions
ranged from service problems to com-
munication to how we can all get on
board.
There were three rotating workshops
that followed Friday afternoon.
Max Haithcox presented “The Six Pillars
of Network Security”. During Haithcox’s
workshop, he stressed that according
to UPS Capital, sixty percent of small
businesses are out of business within six
months of a cyberattack. He touched
on what motivates cybercriminals, why
companies are concerned, and what the
current reality is regarding these attacks.
Most importantly, he went over consider-
ations and precautions to take to protect
your company.
Jennifer Davis, CEO of Davisware, Inc.,
presented “Intelligent Self Learning To-
day and Beyond”. During the workshop,
she talked about how much technology
is enveloping us in every facet of what
we do. IoT is a giant network of connect-
ed “things”, which also includes people.
She explained that Intelligent Self Learn-
ing (ISL) combines IoT, big data, and Al
(Artificial Intelligence). Davis went over
the prerequisites to IoT success, the
growth of IoT, and how ISL can be ap-
plied to CFESA. She told her audience
that these things have never been more
prevalent, and that it has only just begun.
Bryan Dodge, Owner of Dodge Devel-
opment, presented on “The Power of
Leading into the Future”. During Dodge’s
workshop, he discussed how to utilize
foresight and avoid the same mistakes
that have occurred in the past. He
stressed the importance on how a com-
pany should update their interviewing
mindset and how to build a career for
their techs, not just a job. Dodge talked
about the three proven steps to know if
you are building loyalty and value within
your team and most importantly, how
to avoid the biggest mistakes made in
recruiting.
