purse and flew out the back way. She desperately searched around, trying hard to think, trying hard to see a way out. She pushed away all thoughts of what would happen if she were caught. Just as she thought that it was impossible, she spotted a white truck with the motor running. It was the linen-delivery truck that was leaving the grounds. Mia was back to praying and hoping to catch a ride. She wanted to go home, back to Manhattan. She spun some crazy story to the man at the steering wheel, about being ill with a migraine and she needed to lay down. The driver was young and he found her very attractive, so Mia’s wish came true. The delivery truck became her chariot to freedom. She got into the back of the truck and lay down, nursing her so-called migraine, as they sped through the elaborate front gate of this elegant, mysterious, and now sinister Long Island estate called Owl’s Nest.
At the gate, they were just waved through. Mia tried to steady her breathing, as the driver drove quickly into the darkness.
