Shared Ride Response to Airport shifts in Ground Transportation Systems & the TNC Response
McCarthy shared with the group that his own traditional shared ride revenues were down, but new services such as their sedan and especially SUV services, were expanding rapidly. He believes there is an airport market for shared ride services and a mix of services will be necessary, but that The GO Group is optimistic about the market and continues to invest in what they feel is a growth market.
Note:
Thanks to David Bird of SuperShuttle and John McCarthy of the GO Group for the use of the above-mentioned material and slides. Latest Updates & News
A special Wednesday morning presentation at the fall conference was made by Samuel Saint-Jean, Head of Network Development, North America for TravelCar. TravelCar has grown to operate in more than 50 U.S. airports and continues to grow at a rapid pace. TravelCar is one of several car sharing companies that are attempting to capitalize on the concept of peer-to-peer car rentals. TravelCar is unique in that it offers airport parking at competitive rates, but free parking if you list your vehicle with

whatever fees are required for rental car agreements at that airport and new remote car rental facility charges, wherever they apply. TravelCar is thereby completely in compliance with airport regulations and ordinances regarding airport car rental requirements.
Reacting to heavy curb congestion, many large U.S. airports have built remote car rental facilities and require that all car rental companies be housed in this new facility or, at a minimum, pick up their customers from this facility. In addition to the 10% or more of the rental agreement, the airport imposes a fee for the rail or bus transfer facilities used to transport passengers to and from the remote car rental facility.
Now come companies that are part of the peer-to-peer sharing industry, primarily Turo, a large European car sharing company that, like Uber, argues they are not a car renting company but an innovative internet “platform” that joins car owners with car renters through the Turo app. Sounds familiar to many – Airbnb, TNCs, and now car sharing! One can easily see the major battle brewing between Turo and the airports – especially when Turo advertises using the slogan “Skip the Car Rental Counter”.
