Shared Ride Response to Airport Shifts in Ground Transportation Systems
 As SuperShuttle President Dave Bird's presentation illustrated, SuperShuttle is on the move through improved customer and operator experience, mobile app features, a new driver app, universal routing engine, new growth opportunities (flight crew, single stop, new API partnerships), new pricing, safety advancements, and something called LCVs, or Limited Capacity Vehicles. LCVs are another way of saying their customer base is changing. Customers want to leave the airport faster, not go too far off their route, and relax in comfort doing it... Translation – smaller vans and sedans offering fewer stops and single use vehicle trips.
Also mentioned by Dave was the concept of dynamic pricing for peak holiday and other times when others (i.e. TNCs) are surcharging due to the heavy demand. Traditional ground transportation providers need to consider that hotels, airlines, and their main competitor, all use dynamic pricing in their service offerings, so it is at least something traditional ground operators should discuss.
GO Group President, John McCarthy of GO Airport Express in Chicago, presented a similar view of the shared ride airport van
service industry, pointing out that at least one of their operators has ceased operations, while another in a major Westcoast
market has sold out to a competitor. However, those that remain are also changing with the times. GO Group members are
implementing better customer apps, seeking and establishing new markets, and downsizing service offerings to smaller sedans
TNC
and SUVs, often using part time employee drivers with their own personal vehicles.
Not to be outdone by the competition, GO Group displayed their latest app, shown below. Powered by The Hudson Group, the app provides for self-reservation and check in, with instructions of where to go, how to connect with their van, and how to rate the driver.
