ELGIN
the history of ELGIN PARISH
Elgin Parish, established in 1847 from part of Salisbury parish, received its name in honour of Lord Elgin, 8th Gov. Gen. of British North America. Settlements had already been established in the parish area during the early 1800s. Elgin was well known as a farming settlement with 36 families by 1866. Lumbering was an important industry with “river drives” on the Pollett River. By 1871 the population was 250 and by 1876 a railway from Petitcodiac to Elgin was completed. Elgin had grown to have 6 stores, 3 hotels, 2 churches, post office, sawmill, grist mill, tannery, carriage shop, and cheese factory, as well as having a popular fall fair and race track. Elgin is still the maple-sugar capital of Albert County, and its scenic “autumn coloured” hills bring many visitors.
