HARVEY
the history of
HARVEY
PARISH
Harvey Parish was created in 1838 from part of Hopewell Parish, and named for Sir John Harvey, the Lt. Governor of New Brunswick at that time. During the 1800s, Harvey Parish had productive farms, a prosperous lumber trade, and a free stone export business from Mary’s Point quarry. The ships built at the Brewster and the Gaius Turner shipyards at Harvey Bank, achieved a reputation for superior construction. The names of early settlers included Calhoun, Brewster, Smith, Turner, Tingley, Bishop, Robinson, Martin, DeWolfe and Wells. In 1982, Mary’s Point became the first Canadian site designated in the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve.
