HILLSBOROUGH
the history of HILLSBOROUGH PARISH
Hillsborough, a Nova Scotia
township of 100,000 acres in 1765,
became part of New Brunswick as Hillsborough Parish (Westmorland
County) in 1786, being named after
the Earl of Hillsborough. British
land grant owners arranged to bring homesteaders to resettle the land
left vacant in the Hillsborough
Township after the Acadian
expulsion. In 1766, German
(Deutsche) families arrived from Pennsylvania. Some of the families
settled at the Bend (Moncton), but
Heinrich and Rachel Stief, with their
seven sons, settled in the area of the
former Acadian settlement of
Village des Blanchard, which
became the village of Hillsborough.
The Stiefs were soon joined by other German families from the Bend, as
well as immigrant settlers from the
British Isles. New settlements
extended rapidly along the
Petitcodiac River and inland. The
Steeves colony flourished with fields
of grain, orchards, vegetable gardens
and barns full of livestock. They
raised cattle and had a good market
of selling beef to Halifax. The
Steeves family built their first ship, 6. named “The Brothers”, at Gray’s 7. Island in 1800. Today, the Steeves 8. family descendants number over
200,000 throughout the world.
