the history of HOPEWELL PARISH
Hopewell was established as a Nova Scotia township in 1765 and became part of the province of New Brunswick in 1786: possibly named for Hopewell, Pennsylvania, home of some of the first settlers to the area: may have also been named for the ship (Hopewell) that brought a group of settlers from Ireland in 1761. Hopewell Parish included Harvey Parish until 1838. After 1758, the earliest settlers in the Hopewell Parish established homes on the five original land grants named, Dickson, Daniels, Prince, Peck and Calhoun. Communities were established, roads were built, and industries brought prosperity to the parish. In 1877, the railway was completed from Salisbury to Albert station. In 1904, the County Court House was rebuilt, after being burned in a 1903 forest fire. The Riverside Consolidated School, built in 1905, was the most modern in the province.
