the history of ALMA PARISH
Alma Parish was established from the western half of Harvey Parish in 1855, taking its name after the Battle of Alma during the Crimean War. During the time of the first settlers, the community of Alma was called Salmon River, but was renamed Alma in 1873. In 1966, Alma was incorporated as a village.
Whereas many areas of the county were flourishing in the early 1800s, Alma Parish was slow to be settled. The rugged coastal terrain was not conducive to settlements of any size. By 1830 persecution and lack of employment in Ireland brought many immigrants to the area. Other families from Nova Scotia and Maine settled in the region at about the same time. Early settlers included the Cleveland, Turnbull, Locke, Foster, McKinley, Rossiter, Christopher and Edgett families.
Many small sawmills sprang up along the rivers and lakes and lumbering became a key industry. Weir fishing was to follow in 1840 but died off in the 1880s. Today's industries are lobster and scallop fishing, along with tourism.
