Janet McFadyen
Deputy Head, Laxton Junior School
It is with great sadness that we said farewell in the summer, after 11 years of exceptional dedication and contribution, to our Deputy Head and Designated Safeguarding Lead. Over the course of her tenure at Laxton Junior School, Janet was a supportive and inspiring member of staff, who had a significant impact on the lives of our community.
Kindness, care and a determination to bring joy to others define her approach to schools and education. There were no shortage of examples from amidst our Laxton Junior School family of instances where, in times of difficulty and need, she provided the necessary wisdom, guidance, support and, of course, hugs to enable problems and obstacles to be conquered. In addition, she transformed the School’s approach to safeguarding the children in our care, as well as strategically developing our approach to key policies and
procedures that ensure the successful running of LJS.
Perhaps, though, the greatest impact she had and the lasting legacy of her time at our School was her belief that this should be a fundamentally happy place. Indeed, she worked tirelessly to ensure that every child loved coming to School, every parent felt confident in the quality of experience they received and every member of staff had the individualised care they needed to be able to deliver the very best teaching and learning opportunities to their pupils. For all this and so much more, we will miss Janet very much indeed and hope that she will find the same happiness in her future educational and personal endeavours as she brought to everyone at Laxton Junior School over the last 11 years. Sarah Newman
Music teacher, Laxton Junior School
Twenty-five years ago, a phenomenally talented musician and teacher was appointed by Oundle School to support those children who wished to develop their passion and aptitude for the violin. This teacher was Sarah, who, after an incredible length of service, retired this year.
Soon after her appointment, she extended her support for burgeoning musicians by delivering some one- to-one lessons at Laxton Junior School. Her fantastic work with the younger children, inspiring them to love Music and strings, led the Director of Music to invite Sarah to lead the Year Two strings project following its inception in 2001. The project grew in reach and status, and became the flagship Music programme at LJS, developing not just an endless series of sensational strings players, but a community of children whose passion for Music led them to other instruments and an ever-growing need for the LJS Music department to make provision in brass, percussion, voice, woodwind and the piano.
Along with her superb one-to-one work, the strings project and whole class Music teaching, Sarah contributed to LJS’s superb reputation for producing amazing musicians and inspired a love of Music in so many children that we are sure continues with them today. We would like to thank Sarah for her huge contribution to this School and its Music, and wish her all the very best for her retirement.
