As usual, Richard Harris (Lx 91) has been very active on the OO golfing front, captaining the side in the Grafton Morrish and playing in the Halford Hewitt. He regularly sees fellow Wargrave OOs Alex Deacon (Lx 90), Henry Bryers (Lx 96) and Matt Perowne (Ldr 01). He enjoyed the cricket tour with The Mostyns, including seven OOs – David Ffoulkes-Jones (Lx 90), Oliver Thain (Lx 90), Dan Anslow (S 90), Leckie Waterhouse (Sn 90), Phil Dobson (Sn 90), David Robinson (Lx 90) and JJ Harris (Lx 91) – to northern France. The highlight of his OO year was the Sports Lunch at Queen’s Club in London, where he organised a table of 10 from the 1st XV he played in at the School, plus Terry and Brenda Cobner.
Matt Perowne reports that he and his wife had their third (and final!) child last May – a boy – so they are now a family of five living near Henley-on-Thames in Wargrave, where coincidentally there are three other OOs who all left in the 1990s. Also nearby is Tom Earnshaw (Sn 01), with whom he rowed at Henley. Tom’s wife has just had their first child. In May, Matthew also went to a wedding of great friend Mark Shephard (B 01). There were several OOs at the wedding, including Mark’s brother, Nick Shephard (Ldr 99).
Duncan MacDougall (C 71) has been using the nom de plume Duncan Wells for his writing and voiceover work over the past 40 years. He is married with two daughters and apart from running his own production company producing commercials and music for radio and television, he also has a sailing school and has written three books.
Chris ‘Duff’ Battye (G 89) reports that his company, Duff Press, is still going strong. It handles European promotion for the likes of Def Leppard and Kiss, and in the UK for Marilyn Manson, Guns N’ Roses legend Slash, Rush and Motorhead. He also handled unit publicity for the latest David Tennant film. Chris lives in Berkshire with three children, whom he is trying to convert to heavy metal! He fishes with Simon Burdess (C 89), who lives locally. Simon works for Waitrose and has had three children with his wife,
Becky. They also met up with
Ed Rose (S 89) and Rupert Bowers (S 89).
Since leaving Oundle, Calum Stewart (S 17) has been studying History at the University of Warwick. As part of his course, he opted to live in Venice for 10 weeks at the start of the next academic year. He has been learning Italian as part of his degree, so that he is capable of reading original Italian sources. He has really enjoyed Warwick and has taken up new sports, including boxing.
David Richards (S 78) writes that he is still in touch, albeit irregularly, with Paul Clark (S 79), as they both have teenage families and their own businesses that demand their attention. They hope to meet before the end of the decade. David also wonders where their mutual friend, Andrew Hogg (S 78), is these days, as they lost contact a few years back. He would love to catch up with Andy; any news anyone? Finally, David contacted Michael Aubrey, his O-level English teacher, who sparked his love of the English language, to thank him for inspiring him back in the 70s. He was delighted to hear back from Michael that he is still around, lives in Oundle and is now a painter of great repute.
Peter Coville (Ldr 92) and his wife met up with James Rennie (Ldr 93) and his family over New Year at their house near Zurich for a great skiing holiday. They are well, but busy. They also met up with consultant
plastic and reconstructive surgeon Greg Thomas (D 92) for dinner for the first time in many years.
The Oundle memories of Derek Cole (B 50) have been stimulated by the recent and second Peterborough by-election. The first was during World War Two and provided one of Dudley Heesom's favourite stories of how an Oundle School employee, Sam Bennett, “the seventh son of a country shepherd”, defied the wartime party truce by standing as an Independent Labour candidate and losing against the government candidate, “the eldest son of a belted earl, John Hely-Hutchinson”, better known as Lord Suirdale.
John Meighan (Ldr 55) visited Bangkok, where son Mike (Ldr 91) is having another large schooner built for his education company, Global Expeditions Group. Along with Mike, Jo and their two boys, he visited Myanmar and Cambodia. John returned to his Siesta Key home via Hong Kong and San Francisco, and enjoyed four months of Florida sun before returning to the UK. As usual, Mike spent the summer in the British Virgin Islands, running the ActionQuest summer programmes for teenagers. Grandson Kai was on one of them, whilst his older brother, Joshua, joined a Go Beyond venture in Australia.
Marcus Tse (F 10) reports that he got married in April 2019 to Monica Ho. They have been together for six years and are now living in Coventry.
