that his nieces, Flora Hodge (D 06), and Sophie Farquharson (D 08), are sharing a house they bought in London.
Mark Granger (C 77), who recently saw Michael at Newby Hall near Ripon, has served 22 years as Chief Executive of leading property consultants Carter Jonas. He has seen Clive Anderson (S 77) quite a bit, as well as his son, Fergus Anderson (St A 17), who is Mark’s godson. Mark also saw Ian Hodgson (Sc 78) and Andrew Smith (B 79) at Wimbledon. He sees brother John Granger (C 71) quite a bit as well and spent a very good Christmas with him.
Edward Waterson (S 69) and wife Jill are happily ensconced in the centre of York, absorbing what such a lovely city has to offer. He is coming to an end of most of his charitable activities, some by choice, others by effluxion of time. This will give him time to continue with his latest book on Walter Brierley aka the 'Lutyens of the North'.
This follows previous property-
Will Theakston (Ldr 04), who as part of the successful Men Of Oar team rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to Antigua, raising over £70,000 for Combat Stress and Bowel Cancer UK
oriented books, including his popular Lost Houses of Yorkshire series. Edward is also writing various articles that include one explaining how he smuggled spare parts for the world’s remotest Rolls Royce in his underpants when travelling to the tiny South Atlantic island of St Helena. He claims he wasn’t wearing them at the time! His own 1956 Rolls allows Edward to play Toad of Toad Hall, much to Jill’s chagrin, and they joined the Goodwood Revival last year. Edward’s son, James Waterson (S 07), is thriving as Media Editor of The Guardian and was the journalist who broke the high-profile story regarding Boris Johnson’s early- hours altercation with his partner during the recent Tory leadership campaign. Edward has come across countless OOs over the past year, but reserves a mention for his mates of Study 10 in Sidney, John Hyde (S 70) and Phil Cartwright (S 69), who will be taking in their annual gentlemen’s break in the Lake District this autumn.
Anthony Collinson (S 59) has become a trustee of the Two Ridings Community Foundation, which gives funds to charities and community groups at a local level to reach people who need it most across the North and East Ridings of Yorkshire. He enthusiastically states that contributions from OOs in the area would be gratefully received. He continues to live in the lovely village of West Tanfield near Ripon. He has recently had dinner with Michael Brook and the two then bumped into each other whilst travelling to London courtesy of LNER.
Richard Bennett (N 97) advises that he is still working in government and living in Gloucestershire. This year he has become engaged to Charlotte Davey and is delighted to report that they will be getting married in early 2020. He still “runs, cycles and climbs regularly, either in the UK or abroad”, which all sounds very athletic!
Last December/January, the adventurous Will Theakston (Ldr 04) was part of the successful Men Of Oar team who rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to Antigua, raising
over £70,000 for Combat Stress and Bowel Cancer UK. To quote Will: “This meant many hours spent at rowing clubs or in gyms training at the expense of a social life! Yet it was absolutely worth it and a truly fantastic experience that I would recommend to anyone. However, most usefully the row provided great training for the sleep deprivation that Hannah and I are currently enduring, given the recent addition to the family of Rory, born in May! Godparent duties have been given to ‘Winks’ Wilson (Ldr 04). As a fellow OO, Laundimerian and Yorkshireman, what more qualification do you need?! I think next year may be a little less adventurous, but no less fatiguing!”
My father and co-correspondent, Tim Waring (Ldr 76), has recently returned to live in Harrogate after five years of ‘exile’ in West Yorkshire, where he used to reside close to well- known regional OOs Richard Ellis (Sn 86), Ian Lane (Ldr 77) and Bob Harrap (B 68), all of whom will no doubt have been mentioned in Richard’s report. Of late, Tim has seen various other northern-based OOs, including Richard ‘Fred’
Wilson (Ldr 72) at the Great Yorkshire Show; Paul Turner (S 86) ironically at an event near Hull, despite both being Harrogate residents; and Nigel Lane (St A 75) at the summer party of Bob Harrap’s sister in Leeds. Tim has also had regular property dealings with estate agents David Phillip (Ldr 77) and Nick Alcock (N 90).
So, whilst Dad might fly the OO flag in Yorkshire, I do likewise from my South London base, with occasional visits further afield, including four days at the Henley Regatta and attendance at the Oundle tent. I have recently moved to political intelligence company Dehavilland, so my time is variously spent in Brixton, Clapham and Westminster, as well as Harrogate whenever possible.
Finally, we would both like to thank Simon Redfern (Sc 75) for his
outstanding contribution as Editor of
The Old Oundelian over many years.
He has assured us he will make a full contribution to the North Yorkshire regional report next year! www
