he handcuff knot is the basis for this more elaborate knot, which is, in fact, finished with a
T couple of half-hitches. As its name suggests, firefighters used this in rescues. One loop fitted
under the victim's armpits, the other behind the knees. The rescuer then lowered the victim by
means of one long end, while a second rescuer on the ground pulled the victim away from the
wall or flames.
Make a clockwise overhand
I loop in the bight of a length
of rope.
Add an anti-clockwise
2 underhand loop of the
same size.
Partly overlay the right-
3 hand loop in front of the
left-hand one.
At the same time, pull the
4leading edge of the left-
hand loop (from the back to
the front) through the right-
hand loop, and the leading
edge of the right-hand loop
(from the front to the back)
through the left-hand loop.
