I Sedertdien was daar heelwat interaksies met boere en verwerkers op grondvlak en was die mees algemene “He will shield you with His wings! They
will shelter you. His faithful promises
As vertrekpunt moet ek are your armour.” Prov. 15:4
Laasgenoemde Hennie Bruwer
So byvoorbeeld sal Posbus PO Box 912232
Editorial Committee:
Preface by: Hennie Bruwer, CEO Cotton SA Hennie Bruwer
                                                                                                     Koot Louw
In the two previous editions much has been said about the approved fi ve year Cluster Programme by the Department of Trade and Hein Schröder
Industry (dti) as well as what the outcomes of it entails. Robbie Kemp
Since then there has been much interaction with farmers and processors at ground level and the general question that came to the
fore was: “What advantages are there in the Cluster for me as a farmer?” From a point of departure, I fi rstly have to remind producers COMPILED BY:
that the Cluster Programme is underwritten by the dti and is therefore not an agricultural matter and furthermore the dti as such Nufarmer Pty Ltd
has no mandate to interfere at agricultural level! The fact is that cotton is recognised as both an agricultural as well as an industrial Tel: 012 – 804 5854
product. It becomes an industrial product when the fi bre is removed from the seed during the ginning process and this fi bre then ADVERTISING
becomes the entry level product of the cotton value chain for the textile and clothing industry.
The purpose of the Cluster programme is to technologically support activities pertaining to the ginning of cotton up to the fi nal Suzanne Oosthuizen
garment (fi bre to fashion), according to international best practices. Since farmers over time also became owners of ginneries, it Tel: 012 – 804 5854
is obvious that the advantages of the programme which is applicable to fi bre will also be of advantage to the farmer. The ultimate Cell: 082 832 1604
goal of the Cluster is to improve the competitiveness of the textile and garment industries and also to promote local procurement E–mail: suzanne@pop.co.za
of raw materials. The increase in competitiveness will lead to better utilisation and creation of capacity in the value chain with ADMINISTRATION &
resulting increased demand for raw materials and job opportunities.
Furthermore, the Cluster also encompasses the development of a business model to improve the ineffi ciency in the textile and SUBSCRIPTIONS
garment industries which will lead to improved cost savings that can be passed on to the role players in the value chain. An inherent Susan Pieterse
component of the business model is to ensure greater price security for participants. As an example, participating ginners, as Tel: 012 – 804 5854
far as cotton is concerned that is delivered under the Cluster Programme, will no longer be exposed to fl uctuating international Editorial content in CottonSAKatoen is
exchange rates and fi bre prices. This is because the model’s goal is for the complete transaction; from the buying of fi bre up to the published under the auspices of the CEO
manufacturing of garments under the Cluster Programme, to be based on local production costs and central funding. Alongside of Cotton SA and management.
central funding, all ad hoc costs such as price hedging, interest and carrying costs will be limited which will lead to higher effi ciency
and better utilising of scale of benefi ts. We reserve copyright for all content
In summary, the Cluster will lead to greater certainty for participating ginners (farmers) by way of: in this publication and advise readers
         • availability of pre-planting lint prices at planting time based on latest production costs and best management practices; that opinions formed in the editorials
