Island Facts
Though it’s been inhabited for close to 8,000 years,
Hamilton Island remains very much a pris ne, natural
environment.
History
From its original se lement by the Ngaro Aboriginal
tribe, to its visit by Captain Cook in 1770, and
evolu on as a tourist des na on in the 1970s and
1980s, Hamilton Island has had a long and interes ng
history. The island was purchased by renowned
Australian winemaker, Bob Oatley, in 2003, and since,
has become one of the world’s leading holiday
des na ons.
Environment
While there is an abundance of restaurants, bars and
resorts on Hamilton Island, only a third of the island is
developed ‐ meaning the rest remains in its pris ne,
natural state. There are more than a dozen walking
trails through which guests can explore the island.
Infrastructure
Every year, the Oatley family invests millions of
dollars in improving the accommoda on,
infrastructure and services available on Hamilton
Island. This includes ensuring that waste is disposed
of in the most environmentally‐friendly manner and is
re‐used wherever possible ‐ as well as making sure
power sources are u lised in the most efficient way.
Weather
Hamilton Island weather is sub tropical which makes
it perfect for holidays in the sun for the majority of
the year. Hamilton Island lies on the same tropical
la tude as Honolulu in the northern hemisphere and
Mauri us in the south. It has a year round warm
tropical climate with the average temperature in
March 27.4 degrees Celsius.
