15. Directs work
29. Demonstrates self-awareness
31. Situational adaptability
Overusing:
2. Action oriented
Tips to overcome Overdependence on a single skill
1. Need a change? Plan your next assignment. Think carefully about your next natural point for an
assignment change. This time, press your boss, business unit, or organization for something different.
Could be different geography, same job but different business unit, same job but different
assignments, or a completely different job. Sometimes if you have been in something too long, you
may have to take a lateral or even a short-term downgrading to get on a different track.
2. Want to see alternatives? Broaden your perspective. Volunteer for task forces and study teams
outside your area. Be brave and consider things you’ve never even thought of being involved in
before. Go beyond your comfort zone. Look into joining groups involved in things that don’t even
relate to what you are used to doing. Investigate those that would require you to stretch and learn
skills you never thought you would need.
3. Ready to learn from others? Learn from other functions. Attend off-sites and meetings of
functions and units other than yours. Build relationships with people you don’t normally interact with.
Be curious about their area of the organization. Ask lots of questions to learn as much as you can. Be
prepared to reciprocate so the door is kept wide open. Keep up-to-date with what they’re doing.
Relate their activities to your own area. What impact do the two areas have on each other?
