Sustainable Ways of Working (SWOW ) is about living and working in ways that enhance life today
while taking into account the needs of future generations. It’s about creating products, programs and
services that are beneficial to life, and producing them in ways that don’t cause harm to society or the
environment. It’s also about building economic strength and prosperity for GOJO and all of our
stakeholders so that we may continue to work in sustainable ways.

A recent project, completed by the Facilities Maintenance Team and led by Lamont Cunningham, is a
great example of SWOW—focusing on employee well-being, community responsibility, and
environmental sustainability. In an effort to reduce use of electricity and electrical costs, the Facility
Maintenance Team set out to replace traditional fluorescent lightbulbs and fixtures with light emitting
diode (LED) bulbs and fixtures throughout the facilities at GOJO Lippman Campus, GOJO Plaza, and
GOJO Wooster Campus. More than 20,000 fluorescent bulbs have been replaced with LED bulbs. This
transition to LED lighting will save GOJO over $240,000 a year in electrical costs.

The transition to LED lighting offers several sustainable benefits, including increased energy efficiency,
cost savings, and reduced carbon emissions, but the LED lighting transition provides additional benefits
beyond efficiency. Recent research indicates that lighting has increasingly become a public health
issue, showing that individuals working in natural sunlight are more productive, more effective, and
happier than those who work under traditional artificial light (Ellis, Gonzalez, Kratzer, McEachron, &
Yeutter, 2013). LED lighting more closely simulates natural light, creating an enhanced environment and
            contributing to employee well-being.

Thank you to the Facilities Maintenance Team for their work on this project. If you’re working on a
project with an SWOW focus, we’d love to hear more about it!
