Review active Letter, Picture, and Sight Word Decks.
• Play as many times as desired. If children seem to have mastered the game, allow one child to come to the front of the room and play “teacher.” Another alternative is to leave the classroom while children select a letter; once you return, try to guess the letter they picked.
Daily Letter and Sound Review
Objective: To practice letter recognition, letter sounds, and sight words • Quickly review active Letter Cards 1–66. Have children name each
letter.
• Quickly review active Picture Cards 1–85. Have children name each keyword and sound.
• Show children Sight Word Cards 1–75 in random order. Ask children to read each word.
• Using the results indicated on the Sight Word Evaluation Form, select individual children to spell those sight words they have not yet mastered. Choose a few children every day.
Assessment and Remediation
Written Assessment
➤ Note: Children may refer to any of the wall cards or their Student Spelling Dictionary and Reference Booklets after the assessment.
Distribute Assessment 16 and have children complete the written portion as a class.
Have children spell the following by #1–#7: thimble, table, couch, show, know, how, coil.
For #8–#1≠, have children code and then read the words silently.
For #22–#2≠, have children read the paragraph and answer the questions.

Seat children where they can write comfortably. Distribute
Assessment 16.
Section I (3 points each; 21 total):
“Find #1 on your page and write the word ‘thimble.’ ” Continue with #2–#7:

5. know 6. how 7. coil
Allow time for children to write each word. If necessary, use each word in a sentence.
Section II (2 points each; 14 total):
“Code the words by #8–#14 and read them to yourself.”
Allow time for children to do this.
Section IV (3 1/3 points each; 10 total):
“On the back of the assessment, read the paragraph and answer the questions.”
Collect the assessments and correct them. Review any mistakes individually with children. This review may occur during the oral portion of the assessment.
