Spelling Test
• Distribute a sheet of handwriting paper to each child.
“We’re going to take our weekly spelling test.”
“Write your name on your paper and number it from #1 to #20.”
• Allow time for children to do this.
• Call out the following words, in this order, and allow time for children to spell each word:
1. teach 2. sky 3. time 4. read 5. try
6. think 7. slam 8. hide 9. by
11. drink 12. home 13. jump 14. fumble 15. game
16. year 17. each 18. and 19. pink 20. eat
10. thing
• If necessary, sound out each word or use it in a sentence.
“Turn your paper over and write the following sentence: Put the box in the corner of the room.”
• If necessary, repeat the sentence.
“Now write the following sentence: The old man has a white dog with black spots.”
• Collect the spelling tests and grade them, always correcting any misspelled words so the child will see the correct spelling.
• Review any mistakes with children individually.
• Have children put their spelling tests in their Homework Folders.
Oral Assessment
• Oral assessments are short, individual interviews given during independent work time. Complete them promptly (today, if possible) in order to identify areas for remediation.
• With one child at a time, move to an area where others cannot overhear. Have the child’s assessment, some tokens, and a pencil available.
• Use the assessment and the following dialogue to complete the oral portion.
• Section III (5 points each; 35 total): • Point to the word by line # 8 (hoist).
“Read this word for me.”
• Write the child’s response by #15 in Section III, or check off the word if read correctly. Use tokens as necessary to motivate children (as done in Lesson 5).
• Repeat with the following items, recording children’s responses on the lines in Section III for #16–21: #9 (spout), #10 (noun), #11 (brain), #12 (day), #13 (squeak), and #14 (stubborn).
