Saxon Phonics and Spelling 2 LESSON 80
Administer the Second Fluency Assessment and record the results.
• To administer the assessment, photocopy the Second Fluency Assessment. For each child, be sure to use the assessment passage that matches his/her independent reading level. Then, with one child at a time, move to an area where others cannot overhear. Follow the directions under “Goals and Benchmarks of Assessment” in the Fluency Instruction booklet as you administer the assessment and record the results.
• Compare the results of the assessment with the rubric in the “Goals and Benchmarks of Assessment” section of the Fluency Instruction booklet, and use them to tailor the fluency instruction in your class. If desired, use the Formal and/or Combined Fluency Assessment Recording Form to track children’s performance and progress throughout the year.
➤ Enrichment: As children’s reading skills improve, allow those reading the Easy or Average readers to read a more advanced level of a previously introduced fluency reader or passage that matches their independent reading level.
• To obtain the maximum benefit of fluency instruction, children should practice fluent reading for at least 15 minutes every day. The Fluency Instruction booklet suggests a variety of reading activities.

Fluency Assessment
• Like the fluency passages, fluency assessments feature excerpts from the fluency readers. Three sets of fluency assessments are provided, so you can assess children at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. Each set of assessments consists of an Easy selection, Average selection, and Challenging selection.
• The Second Fluency Assessments (Easy, Average, and Challenging) are introduced in this lesson and can be administered at any time after Fluency Reader 14 has been practiced. These assessments will help you measure children’s present abilities and identify specific skills for reinforcement. Use the results to help guide fluency instruction as you help children work toward their year-end goals. For more information, see the “Goals and Benchmarks of Assessment” section of the Fluency Instruction booklet.
