                   The Educational Proble ms and Policies of


                                      Remote Areas in Taiwan



                                                     Abstract


                   Recent years, Taiwan  is becoming as an M-shaped form of  social and
                   economic structure as well as its practice in education. There are some
                   traits reflected from the educational practice in remote areas: Schools

                   are usually small, students’ composition is complex, teachers tend to
                   be young and inexperienced, teachers’ recruitment is quite frequent.
                   Based on the literature review and analysis, the educational problems
                   and policies of remote areas in Taiwan are identified as follows: The
                   current educational policies have not helped to diminish the gap between

                   urban and remote areas, MoE in Taiwan has placed more emphasis on the
                   educational practice in such areas, regulations setting to stabilize
                   the provision of teaching and administrative staff, Taiwan is not alone

                   facing the  educational  problems  occurring  in remote areas.  Five
                   suggestions are given for the reference of educational authority boards:
                   The  flexibility  of educational policies,  necessity of teachers’
                   recruitment, incentives for teachers, review of policies and
                   experiences in  other countries, care for teachers’  needs in remote

                   areas.
