138 NOTES ON EZEKIEL.
acceptable year of Jehovah opens with the day of
vengeance of our God. And how solemn the difference
of the lines measured out to Zidon and Israel! The
Zidonians should know He is Jehovah by the judgments
by which He would be sanctified in their city; Israel
should know Him Jehovah their God when He has
gathered them in from the nations where they are still
scattered and is sanctified in them in the sight of the
Gentiles. “ Thus saith the Lord Jehovah, When I
shall have gathered the house of Israel from the people
among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified
in them in the sight of the heathen, then shall they
dwell in their land that I have given to my servant
Jacob. And they shall dwell safely therein, and shall
build houses, and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell
with confidence, when I have executed judgments upon
all those that despise them round about them; and they
           shall know that I am Jehovah their God.”  (Yer. 25, 26.}

                          CHAPTER XXIX.

T he next series consists of four chapters directed
against Egypt, as the last three against Tyre with its
prince and king. The evil denounced is no longer
commercial pride, but confident nature, and this especi
ally in political wisdom. We shall see how God brings
to nought the power which is thus characterized and set
itself up in haughty independence of Him; for we have
here the judgment of the nations, Israel included,,
before Bab v Ion acquired its imperial supremacy.
