The Settlement of Darien Oglethorpe in Highland Dress Highlander
They decided to name the settlement Darien in honor of an earlier Scottish settlement attempt. A month later February
22, Oglethorpe came to inspect and review their troops also wearing the Highland dress in their honor with claymore,
side arms, and targes (shields) marking the first military parade in Georgia. Soon they would become the key force in the
“Battle of Bloody Marsh” which ended any further Spanish attempts to conquer Georgia or the rest of the North
American coast.
