Our Big Blue Backyard
11 x 60’, 2014-2016, HD
‘Our Big Blue Backyard’ explores the unique marine locations around New Zealand’s coastline and its outlying islands. We travel from Northland to Stewart Island and
further afield to the Kermadec Islands, 1000 nautical miles northeast of the north island; White Island; the Chatham Islands; Banks Peninsula; Fiordland; and two of New
Zealand’s Sub Antarctic islands – Campbell and Antipodes. Here we explore the special marine environments and meet the colourful and varied inhabitants as they interact
in their unique locations. From the giant to the tiny and the acrobatic to the rock scrapers, the range and behaviours of these species in such close proximity is fascinating.
There is plenty of action in these aquatic communities as the lives of these close neighbours weave together to reveal entertaining animal dramas. It’s predator versus prey
as surfing orcas travel the golden harbours of Northland; quality time with the big old snapper and crayfish of Goat Island; a day out with the athletic Dusky Dolphins of
Kaikoura; a fur-seal summer off New Zealand’s wild west coast and great white shark versus little blue penguins in the southern oasis of Stewart Island. Whilst in the islands,
we travel further and get to see humpback whales, huge groper, longfin eels, Hector’s dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, seven-gill sharks, yellow-eyed and Fiordland crested
penguins, southern royal albatross, New Zealand sea lions and giant spider crabs to name just a few. Series 3 coming Autumn 2022
