The Okavango, in southwest Africa, is a very special river. It is born deep in the highlands of Angola – but instead of flowing westward to the Atlantic Ocean, the Okavango runs inland, to the East. There, in Botswana, its waters create a huge river delta before they eventually disappear in the Kalahari Desert. The Okavango Delta is a true natural wonder – an unlikely oasis, a lush paradise in the middle of a hostile desert, that harbours, supports and feeds an incredible abundance of wildlife. This outstanding four-part blue-chip series presents pure nature at its finest. The journey along the Okavango reflects the three distinct and very different phases of this remarkable river.

Mist swirls around the base of Shanghai’s skyline. From the city, tigers and monkeys seem as unreal and distant as dragons and mermaids emerging through the mist. Yet they do exist, as rare survivors in an extraordinary and diverse landscape. From snow leopards to wild horses, and from alligators to elephants, China’s iconic wildlife is a lot more than just pandas. This is a film about rare survivors, some well known and much loved, and others important and iconic. Filmed for the first time, these animals are all charming, fascinating, and fragile.
This is the story of the white storks of southwest Portugal. The only place in the world where these emblematic animals nest on cliffs, in a unique ecosystem where two worlds meet: the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The storks are a symbol of this region, and have been preserved over the millennia. This documentary portrays some of its natural history and how the local human lifestyle contributes to the desired balance of the ecosystem. A thought provoking film: how can such a pristine wild sandy coastline cope with the new wave of tourism and modern industries?
Rota Vincentina
It’s midwinter in the mountains of the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau, four kilometres up, and airless. This is the home of the rare snow leopard, the spirit of the Himalayas. Isolated yak herders have battled snow leopards, bears and wolves for generations; these are old animosities. In 2006, the area became a reserve, and a gun ban was strictly enforced. The herders have no way to protect their yak, and start losing 10% of their calves each year. What to do? Spectacular wildlife and a stunning backdrop are the setting for a moving true story about the power of nature, of motherhood, and the fragility of life.
