Mistakes
These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
Matthew 10:5-8
The scripture above is an example of how Jesus exposed His disciples to practical learning as a way of further building them up. He commended them to go and preach, and also heal the sick just as they would be relied upon to do after He had departed from them. This is akin to practical training to complement all the lectures that they had received. Through such an exposure the disciples have first hand experience of what the responsibility entailed, would also make their own mistakes and learn from them. That way, their competence is enhanced and readiness for their ultimate assignment would be assured.
In Matthew 14:28-32, they also witnessed a practical demonstration of power and learnt greatly from the exposure. Peter desired Jesus to command him to walk on water just like
