DONOR IMPACT
2020 The Year of the Pediatric Gaming Technology Specialist
Amid chaos, confusion, isolation, stay at home orders and hospital lockdowns we heard time and time again
that Pediatric Gaming Technology Specialists were there to answer the call. While we are recognizing the work
of four programs, there are 20 more doing similar work with great impact. Your donations are helping patients
and families you will never meet stay connected and keeping the power of play alive during their
hospitalization.
Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital
Developed “Comedy on Call” Zoom visitation program with Healthy Humor’s hospital clowning Program.
Lead technology for the hospitals first ever virtual Pediatric Evening of Remembrance, a night honoring the
lives of patients who passed during the year.
Seattle Children’s Hospital
Converted in person celebrity visits to an online experience. Ensuring these visits continued was
important for the patients as they brought incredible joy during a time of social isolation this year.
Although in person visits have been traditional, moving to virtual allows for more patients to benefit as
the celebrity does not have to allow for travel time to and from the hospital.
Facilitating online group gaming was huge in combating the loneliness of a hospital stay this year with
visitation restrictions and time outside of the room curtailed drastically.
In 2020 Therapeutic Gaming had nearly 1000 patient interaction hours, approximately 150 hours more than
in 2019.
Colorado Children’s
Created custom 3D printed PPE to protect staff and families during COVID-19 pandemic.
Designed custom 3D printed thermometer attachments to make entrance screenings less intimidating to
kids and families.
Facilitated numerous telepresence robot visits to allow families to visit patients from afar during social
distancing restrictions.
Helped to facilitate research study using Hololens 2 AR headset as a distraction method for bandage
changes in burn clinics.
Organized and facilitated asymmetric multiplayer VR gameplay that allows kids on isolation precautions to
play games together from their own hospital rooms.
Created a new workflow to collaborate and co-treat with Physical Therapists in order to utilize VR and
gaming as a physical therapy intervention.
CS Mott
In collaboration with Extra Credits the first animated procedural video was created.
Creation of MottTube. This YouTube playlist with content created by community partners and child life
staff intended to educate and entertain patients.
In collaboration with our Physical Therapy department, Movement at Mott is using virtual reality,
augmented reality, and traditional gaming to encourage patients to get out of bed and move every day
