1. REMARKS BY COUNCIL CHAIRPERSON
The University of Namibia (UNAM) was established
by an act of Parliament, Act 18 of 1992, to be the
premier national university, and tasked with
providing quality research, training and innovation
to all corners of the country in accordance with
government’s plan to decentralise tertiary
education.
It has been three years under the astute leadership
and guidance of the current UNAM Vice
Chancellor, Prof. Kenneth K Matengu, who initiated
a new vision and direction for the institution for the
period 2019 to 2024. The strategic plan covering
2019-2024 was meant to ensure accountability at
all levels of the institution. The year 2021 marked the
mid-point of the implementation of the strategy
which then required the university to pause and
take stock of the progress made so far. After careful
analysis of the progress made, a reviewed strategic
plan emanated from the mid-term review
workshop held in October 2021.
As the University gears towards implementing the
remaining three years (2022-2024) of the
institutional strategic plan, this reviewed plan
captured key national priorities, and positions
UNAM as a truly global player in education, training
and development. The UNAM Council shares in the
optimism of the revised strategic plan and is
confident that the institution will achieve its
strategic objectives.
