INVESTIGATING EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP
SUCCESSION PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION
IN COMMERCIAL PUBLIC ENTERPRISES (CPEs) IN
NAMIBIA.
The doctoral study was undertaken and completed under the
supervision of Dr. Bernardus Franco Maseke (University of Namibia) as
Main Supervisor and the late Prof. Lovemore Matipira as Co-Supervisor.
This study investigated executive leadership succession planning in
Namibia’s CPEs. Specifically, the study sought to identify the factors
that influence executive leadership succession planning, examine the
effects of these factors on CPEs, and develop an executive leadership
succession planning framework for CPEs in Namibia. The study found
that education, mentoring, training, and development are significant
factors that influence executive leadership succession planning
and implementation in CPEs in Namibia. Moreover, charismatic
executive leadership and the use of a transactional leadership style
were found to be critical factors in ensuring the long-term success of
an organization, particularly in terms of fostering a culture of proper
succession development. A major contribution to the discipline was
the development of the Muadinohamba Succession Development
Progression Framework (MSDF), a novel tool designed to assist in
planning leadership succession in Namibian enterprises.
The study recommends further research to validate the Muadinohamba
Succession Development Progression Framework as an instrument to
guide executive leadership succession planning and implementation
in CPEs in Namibia and suggests exploring the effect of executive
leadership succession planning and implementation across all levels
of organizations.
